Eligibility - Student Allowance

Provides a definition of eligibility in relation to Student Allowance applications.

A student must meet a number of criteria to be eligible for a Student Allowance. There is a difference between being eligible for a Student Allowance and being entitled to Student Allowance payments at any given point in time.

To be eligible for a Student Allowance a student must make an application and meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • age and
  • be a New Zealand citizen or entitled to reside indefinitely in New Zealand and
  • be studying full-time or limited full-time at an approved tertiary provider or secondary school
  • or
  • meet the preceding criteria and be in approved overseas study (if applicable)
