Choosing the right tertiary course

Useful information to ensure you have chosen the right course of study before you take out a Student Loan or receive a Student Allowance.

Why it's important to choose the right course

Student Loan

If you take out a Student Loan, but do not complete your course or qualification, you may still have a debt to pay back - so thinking carefully about what course you choose to study is very important.

Student Allowance

If you do not pass the equivalent of more than half the work of a full-time course when you receive a Student Allowance you may lose your Student Allowance entitlement for failing to pass more than half of your study.

If you are thinking about reducing your study or withdrawing from your course please talk to us about the implications this may have for your Student Loan or Student Allowance before you make any decisions.

Knowing if you have made the right choice of study

Knowing if you have made the right choice of study can be hard; but here are some quick questions that you can ask yourself about the steps that you took to get to your study decision:

  • What was the process you followed to make your study decision?
  • Who did you get advice from about your study choice?
  • What are you planning to do with your qualification?
  • What are some of the job opportunities that you would like your studies to lead to?
  • How do you feel your studies will support your short or long term goals?
  • Do you feel like you have enough information to help you with this decision?

Who to talk to about your study

It's good to talk to someone about your study choices and explore the options - where it may lead to or what you are thinking about doing when you have finished your training.
