Transcript: Case study – Chloe
We hear from Chloe, a second year student, about how she chose her course, what student life has been like and the costs she has had as a student. Chloe also talks to us about how she manages her budget and where her income comes from. Chloe is talking to us from the kitchen at her flat.
Hey I'm Chloe, I'm doing a Bachelor of Commerce degree and majoring in marketing. I chose to study that because I've always been interested in branding and advertising.
Also my aunty has got a really awesome job - she's the marketing manager at this fashion magazine, and I kind of want to do something like that.
Got some advice from her, and also after that I went to my Careers Advisor at my high school, and she helped me decide where to go because I wanted to go somewhere with the best reputation, didn't really matter to me about location.
There have been quite a few challenges. Um, first one was flat-finding, which was quite tough as there's quite a lot of competition.
We have an automatic deposit that we put in each week for the flat account, and we also go down to the supermarket and we're sticking to budget food and stuff like that but it's really fun.
I do have a Student Allowance and Accommodation Benefit because I'm living away from home. I do have Student Loan, and it's also been really helpful as well for covering stuff like course-related costs and fees. I also got on top of that before I went down to Uni so that was really helpful, I recommend that.
I saved a lot over summer. I worked all through the summer, and lots of people were like, ‘ugh you're wasting your summer away'. That didn't really matter to me, because I thought that I'm saving so much money for this exciting year ahead.
Flatting is awesome, I recommend it. So much fun, and there's so much freedom but also you've got a lot of responsibilities.
So stick to your budget and yeah, just have fun with it.
