Transcript: Case study – Rashti

We hear from Rashti, a recent graduate, about how he chose his course by thinking about what he enjoys doing, the career opportunities it would lead to and what it would mean for his long-term financial situation. Rashti is talking to us from the lounge at his home.

Hey guys I'm Rashti and I just finished my Bachelor of Agricultural Science last year.

I've always liked science, and I've always liked food.

So, I did my ideal job finder and out of all the list of degrees I could do, it came up with the Bachelor of Agricultural Science, which is what I chose.

I actually lived on campus itself, at the Uni flats because I thought, you know, it would save on transport costs and it would maximise my study time because I wouldn't have to travel to and from Uni.

Challenges of flatting, um... I guess I could start with the fact that I have to pay for everything myself you know, because I was used to the comforts of home before. There are all these things that I used to take for granted that suddenly ambushed me, like all these bills and chores, and you know, Mum and Dad weren't there anymore.

I did have a Student Allowance. It was reduced though because of my parent's combined income, but I was also fortunate enough to qualify for an Accommodation Benefit since I was living away from home.

I did have a Student Loan, yes, it was about eight grand a year, which initially shocked me. Now, well I've got my first job, and I'm getting it clear as fast as I can.

Having debt could limit your options later on in life as well, so choose a course that will allow you to get a job where you can pay off your loan as soon as possible and just get on with it, get on with life.
