Help with work costs

The Student Allowance Transfer Grant is to help if you have a partner or a child and are in hardship because your Student Allowance has stopped and you’re waiting for your benefit to start. This is a one off payment usually made during your stand-down.

General Student Allowance Transfer Grant criteria

You may be able to get it if:
  • you're transferring from Student Allowance to a main benefit
  • you have a partner and your combined income in your stand-down week is under certain limits, or you have a child or children in your care
  • you are considered to be in hardship
  • you apply for the grant no later than the week after your course finishes (you have 5 working days starting from the Monday after the week your course finishes).

How to apply

To apply you need to complete a Student Allowance Transfer Grant application and you need to complete an Unemployment Benefit Student Hardship application.
