Course-related costs

The Student Loan is made up of three parts. When you apply for a loan, you choose what parts you need. The course-related costs part of a Student Loan helps with costs related to your study. For example, stationery, books, computer equipment, travel.

How much you can borrow for course-related costs

You can borrow up to $1,000 per Student Loan account for course-related costs.

Your Student Loan account runs for 52 weeks from the day you start your course – unless your course finishes before 31 December, in which case it will close on 31 December. You can’t use your loan once your loan account has closed.

You don't have to claim all your costs at once, just specify on the form how much you need - you may need to provide evidence of your costs. You can claim the balance at any time up until your course finishes.

We'll send you a course-related costs form once your loan is approved. If you need another form, you need to call us and we'll send another form to you.

Remember: Only borrow as much as you need!

How to apply for course-related costs

When you apply for a Student Loan you have to select that you want to borrow for course-related costs. You can do this when you apply online.

A claim form will be sent to you once your Student Loan is approved. You will need to provide evidence of your costs for example receipts.

If you have already applied for course-related costs and need another form you can request one online at MyStudyLink.

You can apply for the course-related costs and compulsory fees parts of the Student Loan up until the date your course finishes.

How and when payment is made

Course-related costs are paid directly to your bank account. The earliest we can do this is 14 days before your course starts.

Remember, you must be fully enrolled in your course for us to be able to pay any part of your Student Loan.

How much you can get for course-related costs if you get a Training Allowance

The amount you can get for course-related costs goes down by the amount of Training Incentive Allowance you get (not including the Training Incentive Allowance you get for childcare, transport and disability-related costs).
