Inland Revenue and Australian Taxation Office information exchange
21 November 2016.
Inland Revenue can now request and receive information about student loan borrowers based in Australia.
An information exchange with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will enable Inland Revenue to contact borrowers; keeping them up-to-date with changes to the student loan scheme and potentially recover outstanding loan repayments from them.
Around 73% of people who live overseas and have a Student Loan are not meeting their loan repayment obligations. Most of these people are believed to be living in Australia. This change will help Inland Revenue ensure that they meet their loan repayment obligations.
What you need to do
If you’re living or planning to go overseas for more than 6 months, you need to:
- provide up-to-date contact information to Inland Revenue
- contact Inland Revenue if you need to arrange loan repayments.
To stay on track and actively manage their student loan accounts, borrowers can log on or register with myIR secure online services at www.ird.govt.nz
