Changing your papers

If you change papers, you need to let us know straight away as it could affect your payments.

What the change could mean

Changing your papers means you could change from:

  • part-time to full-time study
  • full-time to part-time study.

We use a measurement called EFTS (Equivalent Full-time Student) to work out if you're studying full-time or part-time.

What are EFTS?

What you need to do

Email us or call us

If you have additional compulsory course fees that need to be paid, let us know. We may be able to pay these with a Student Loan. If you don't already have a Student Loan you can apply online

  • Now studying part-time

If you're now studying part-time, your Student Allowance or living costs payments from the Student Loan will stop. If you’re studying more than 1 course, we may be able to join the EFTS together to make you full-time

If you're studying studying part-time for a good reason you may be able to keep getting these payments.

If you can't keep getting your payments, you may be able to get other help with:

    • accommodation costs
    • childcare
    • health and disability costs.
    Help with other costs

You may also be able to get some help from Work and Income

  • Now studying full-time

If you're now studying full-time, you may be able to get:

    • a Student Allowance (a weekly payment to help with day-to-day living expenses that you don't have to pay back)
    • course-related costs from a Student Loan
    • living costs from a Student Loan (a weekly payment that you'll have to pay back).

You can apply online for a Student Allowance or Student Loan (if you don't already have one).

If you've already applied for a Student Allowance and it was declined, we'll send you a letter to let you know what you need to do.

If you already have a Student Loan, you don't need to submit a new application. You can claim for course-related costs or update your living costs online, in MyStudyLink.

    On a benefit

If you're going into full-time study, you may not be able to stay on your benefit. You need to talk to Work and Income about how it will affect your payments.
