Break between study

If you have a break in your study of more than 3 weeks, your Student Loan and Student Allowance payments may stop.

Important information

If you've had to stop studying due to COVID-19, you'll keep getting paid as normal during the four-week lockdown period, and for up to four weeks afterwards. Find out more here.

  • Break of 3 weeks or less

    • If your Student Loan or Student Allowance application is approved for your next block of study your payments may be able to continue.
    • If your application for your next block of study is declined, you won't get payments through your break.
    • If you haven't applied for a loan or allowance for your next block of study after your break finishes, you may be able to extend your study without re-applying for a loan or allowance.
    Change of circumstances

If you have any changes (eg, income) you need to let us know as it could affect your payments.

  • Break of more than 3 weeks

We may be able to help you with expenses during your break but it depends on what you're going to do.

    Work

If you're going to look for full-time work during your break, you may be able to get the Jobseeker Support Student Hardship.

Can't work because of health condition or disability

If you can't work during your break because of a health condition or disability, you may be able to get Jobseeker Support Student Hardship.

    Go overseas

If you go overseas, you may be able to get help from us, it depends why you're going and how long for.
