Our definition of full-time study for Student Loan and Student Allowance
How to work it out
Each tertiary course has a value assigned to it called EFTS (equivalent full-time student). For the course to be approved as full-time, the length of that course must meet a certain EFTS value. See table below.
|Number of weeks||Number of EFTS assigned to be classed as full-time|
|Under 12 weeks||0.025 EFTS a week|
|53 or more||1|
We get this information directly from your education provider. If you're unsure about whether you're full-time, check with them.
More than 1 course
If you're studying more than 1 course, we may be able to join the EFTS together to make you full-time. This criteria is different for Student Loans and Student Allowances.
To be full-time at secondary school, you need to be doing at least 20 hours in the classroom a week.
