Documents supporting your application

You won’t need to send us everything listed on this page. We’ll tell you what we need in the letter we send you after you submit an application.

Important information

All documents you send us must be verified copies. Don't send originals. You can send your documents online using Connect

Verifying copies of original documents

We'll process your documents within 5 working days, but this may take longer during our busier periods, eg, the start and end of the school year. To check if we've received your documents, log in to MyStudyLink

  • Evidence of who you are

    If you: You'll need to send us
    were born in New Zealand birth certificate or passport (order a Birth Certificate online)
    were born overseas evidence that you have a right to live in New Zealand permanently. This could be your:
    • citizenship certificate
    • New Zealand passport
    • passport from another country showing your New Zealand residence class visa
    • letter from New Zealand Immigration Service stating you’ve been granted residency
    • refugee or protected person documentation or evidence of your sponsorship by a family member with refugee or protected person status in New Zealand.
    have changed your name eg, the name in your application is different from the name in the documents you’re providing, send us evidence of your name change, such as your:
    • marriage certificate (order a Marriage Certificate online)
    • adoption paper
    • deed poll.
  • Supporting documents

    Bank account details

    Evidence of your bank account details, for example a bank statement or screenshot of your online banking showing your name, account number and the bank’s logo.

  • 16 or 17 years old

    One of the following:

    • a statement from your school confirming that you have completed year 13
    • evidence that you’ve attained a minimum of 42 NCEA credits at level 3
    • evidence that you’ve been accepted into a full-time tertiary course with a minimum academic entry requirement of 42 NCEA credits at level 3 (please include the name of the course on your evidence)
    • evidence that you’ve obtained a minimum of 42 credits on the National Qualifications Framework at level 4.
  • Under 24 years old and don't have a child

    Your parents need to complete either:

    linksStudent Allowance One parent application form (PDF 300.66KB)

    We'll include a copy of the form in the letter we send you.

    Your parents may also need to provide:

    • evidence of income (the form will tell them what to provide)
    • if they don’t have any income, evidence of how they support themselves
    • birth certificates or passports for other full-time students aged 16-23 they’re supporting.
    If you have one parent
    No relationship with parents
  • If you'll have income while studying

    Evidence of your income or expected income, such as:

    • payslip
    • letter from your employer
    • letter from any organisation that pays you (for example, ACC, Child Support or investment funds).

    If any income is from a scholarship, you need to provide:

    • Agreement Form of the scholarship, or
    • letter of offer.
  • If you have a partner and both of you are 24 years old or over

    Your partner needs to complete:

    We'll include a copy of the form in the letter we send you.

    Your partner may also need to provide evidence of:

    • who they are – this is the same evidence you need to provide for evidence of who you are
    • their income – payslip or letter from their employer.

  • If you have a child or support one

    Have a child

    If you have a child, you can either:

    • register each child's birth with Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) using SmartStart and agree to share this information with the Ministry of Social Development (MSD)
    • provide the birth certificate for each child.

    Support a child

    If you support a child, you'll need to provide the birth certificate for each child you support

    Have a partner

    If you have a partner, they'll need to complete:

    We'll include a copy of the form in the letter we send you.

    Your partner may also need to provide evidence of:

    • who they are – this is the same evidence you need to provide for evidence of who you are
    • their income – payslip or letter from their employer.
